USB LED Light for Camping

Three features drew me to Onite’s USB LED, and each has pleased me thus far, so I’ve decided to buy more (instead of trying the competitor’s much costlier USB LED):
1. Fair price for a solid product: bulb, cord, switch, and USB plug seem to be well constructed; if time reveals something not presently apparent, I’ll be back.
2. Convenient, sturdy metal hanging *hook*: hangs the bulb without the fuss threading something through a hole.
3. Soft, warm-light ambience: yellow tones complement human beings and are more restful for the brain.

The cord and switch are conveniently proportioned, too. To help you anticipate whether the lengths will work for your purposes:
Top of switch to bulb = 23.6″ (60cm)
Bottom of switch to top of USB plug = 36.5″ (92cm)
Switch is approx. 2.4″ long (6cm)

I also appreciate the packaging: a sturdy plain box that’s reusable; careful padding inside; no excess; easy to open.

The bulb is working splendidly. I power it with small solar-/USB-charged battery packs (capacity ratings from 2,400 to 13,000 mAh). I solar-charge my battery packs, and the main reason I bought this bulb (and wish to buy more) is to use less grid power. The other reasons are to light some spaces in my 1920s home that are not wired with sockets or outlets; and to add some “overhead” lighting to the kinds lighting I have for power outages and off-grid wanderings.

If you also intend to power your bulb with a rechargeable battery pack and want guidance choosing 5V battery capacity (measured in mAh) or estimating how long you’ll be able to light the bulb with a battery pack you already own, here are some rough guidelines:
– For 3 hours of light, choose a battery source rated at least 2,400 mAh
– For 5 hours, at least 3,900 mAh
– For 8 hours, at least 6,200 mAh
– For 10 hours, at least 7,800 mAh

The above uses 620 mA (milliamps)for the bulb’s draw of current, because my bulb draws 0.62A (amps). Also, to be realistic and appropriately cautious, my calculations presume using 80 percent, not 100 percent, of stated battery capacity. (Why? Because it’s usually unhelpful to fully drain a battery; there are inefficiencies using battery power; some power pack mftrs rate their products’ capacities “generously”; over time, battery capacity declines; and recharging a battery the last few percentage points is slow and not efficient, especially if one is using another battery or a solar panel to do it.)

One caution, if you actually need “5 WATTS”: The Onite bulb I bought draws 0.62 Amperes at 5.04 Volts, which puts the bulb’s actual power at approximately 3.1 Watts (W = V x A).

The Technical Details erroneously states 5 Watts (note, btw, that the more expensive brand claims “2 Watts”). These are mellow ambient lights, and I experience the Onite as pleasing for its purpose. If you need intense illumination, or are trying to light a large space with one bulb/light, then you’ll need to explore a different kind of product.

With the wattage exception, the Onite product description and illustration are helpful (kudos). But the listed wattage clearly isn’t accurate (others have noticed this, too), so until the the product description is corrected, I delete one star and include this wattage note, since consumers deserve complete and accurate product descriptions on Amazon. (I have measured voltage and amperage with two reliable USB meters, both while powering the bulb with battery packs and while powering it from USB ports on my computer, which is plugged into a typical 110v AC outlet.)

[Rumors] Google Is Calling Android 9.0 Update “Android Pi”?

2018’s big Android update will be Android 9, which will take over from Android Oreo. And Google’s already calling it Android Pi. Around this time of year, we start to look forward to the next big Android update. Normally, there is tons of speculation over what type of dessert the update will be called. But this year it appears as if a name has already been coined by Google.

Google is already referring to the update as Android Pi internally. Whether or not this sticks for when it is officially launched remains to be seen, as there are plenty of dessert-based options at its disposal – parfait, pumpkin, pistachio, peanut, pecan.

The name Android Pi was discovered in some recent notes found inside Google documents. The name Android Pi, at least for now, is what the next update will be called. Though it could well change, as we have seen in the past – Key Lime Pie turned out to be KitKat in the end.

Personally, I believe Google will change the name at launch. Something like Pop Tart makes sense. Or maybe Pecan or Peanut, if Google decides to go the healthier route. Both have more of a ring to it than Android Pi. Plus, it’d get rid of any confusion with the microPC brand, Raspberry Pi.

Android 9 Features

What can we expect from Android Pi (AKA Android 9)? Quite a bit as it goes. Expect to see it installed on plenty more Android phones than Oreo, thanks to the momentum of Google’s Project Treble.

Android Pi will get a release during August 2018, with a launch happening at Google I/O 2018 a month or two before.

There is also said to be more customisation options, improved widgets, full picture-in-picture support for every app, more feature parity, a renewed focus on tablets, and, if that wasn’t enough, the Pixel Launcher will be made available to all Android phones.

These were just what I needed. Most of my gopro mounts only have the brackets and not the bolt. Or they have a bolt hole so that a bracket can be mounted to something with a bolt…. but not the other way around. These are the type of thing you never knew you needed…until you did.

I initially wasn’t all that impressed with the scope as the lack of an actual, printed manual makes most of the controls a bit hidden. A bit of playing around and perusing the FAQ revealed most of what I needed, but the lack of an actual manual is gonna cost a star as that effort really should have been given.

I was a bit nervous about the quality of materials at purchase, but I was pleasantly surprised. The suction cup is strong enough to resist the strength of an adult male when engaged yet releases easily when the clamp is released. The arm is strong as well, comparable to that of a good-quality desk lamp. Assembly is intuitive enough, but again lacks any real instructions on how to do so.

Digital Microscope Arm

The controls are divided between the actual device and the desktop application. Focus and zoom are tied together on the device, so only two magnifications are possible. This removes a lot of the potential control and fine-tuning. Unless you manually re-adjust the resolution under Settings, the default is 0.3MP instead of the quality 2MP. Speaking of the Settings menu, this is also where other controls such as contrast, brightness, saturation, and hue are hidden. Contrast/brightness are basically required as dark objects tend to “black-blob” and lose detail on the digital side. Magnification is done with the focus knob (going from in-focus through a lot of fuzz until it’s back in-focus at higher resolution). For those unused to microscopy, the depth of focus is expectedly low – so you will need to focus in and out for anything larger-scale.
